In France during 1783, the first public experiment with hydrogen-filled balloons involved Jacques Charles, a French professor of physics, and the Robert brothers, renowned constructors of physics instruments.

There are over 900 sites around the world that send up meteorological balloons or weather balloons every day, and it’s coordinated so that they all launch around the world at exactly the same time – noon and midnight London time.

High-altitude balloons are crewed or uncrewed balloons, usually filled with helium or hydrogen, that are released into the stratosphere, generally attaining between 18 and 37 km (11 and 23 mi; 59,000 and 121,000 ft) above sea level. In 2002, a balloon named BU60-1 reached a record altitude of 53.0 km (32.9 mi; 173,900 ft)

SpaceShipEarth is a pilot study by NUI Galway and UL which involves launching five high-altitude space balloons carrying up to 60 experiments from Irish primary students. Three schools are currently involved in the Project. SpaceShipEarth launches July 2nd at Valencia Observatory Co. Kerry.

On July 2nd 2021, the Team will launch up to five weather ballons from the Valencia Observatory in Co.Kerry. The launch will carry your experiments to the upper atmosphere where the balloon will burst and return the payload to earth.

The observatory carries out surface and upper air meteorological measurements as well as a wide range of other measurements such as ozone monitoring, seismology and environmental monitoring.
